Gemeentemuseum: Gijs Assmann installation 'Of Clay'

Dutch artist Gijs Assmann has commissioned Tom Postma Design to design his installation for the Of Clay exhibition in the Gemeentemuseum, to be visited in The Hague till 18 august 2019.

In honour of the fiftieth anniversary of Sundaymorning@ekwc, an international workplace where artists, designers and architects explore the technical and artistic possibilities of ceramics, the Gemeentemuseum is showing installations by seven Dutch artists whose time at the centre influenced their work.

The ceramic sculptures by Gijs Assmann have the structure of still lifes consisting of stacks of recognisable objects. As Gijs Assmann explains, “Like in seventeenth century vanitas paintings, the objects can be seen as symbols. The presentation is an ode to a sensual life, physical thought and vital engagement with the big questions in life. A longing for constancy in doubt.”

Our design was inspired by the architecture and the tones of the Berlage building, which allowed the creation of a composition of elements that make the artworks connect and create a dialogue with the visitors.

The exhibition Of Clay can be visited in the Gemeentemuseum in The Hague from 16 March till 18 August 2019.
